Every morning in the city of Aşgabat, the central hospital becomes active before the sun fully rises. Nurses walk quickly through the halls, doctors prepare their rooms, and visitors wait near the entrance. Today, a young nurse named Aýlar begins her shift early. She ties her hair neatly, puts on her clean uniform, and greets the guard at the hospital door.
Inside, the smell of disinfectant fills the air, and the sound of footsteps echoes through the long hallway. Aýlar checks her list for the day: she must help in the emergency room, guide patients to the right departments, and prepare medical supplies.
Her first task is to take an elderly man in a wheelchair to the X-ray room. His name is Baýram aga, and he smiles warmly at her.
“Sag bol, gyzym,” he says.
“You are very kind.”
Aýlar feels happy to help. She pushes the wheelchair slowly and talks to him so he feels comfortable.
When she returns to the emergency room, a mother with her little boy has arrived. The boy fell while playing and hurt his arm. Aýlar brings a soft bandage and gently wraps his arm while the doctor examines him. The mother thanks her many times, and the boy holds a small toy that the hospital gives to children.
Later, the hospital becomes even busier. Two ambulances arrive with new patients. Aýlar helps move them to their beds and brings fresh water for one of them. She writes notes, gives reports to the doctor, and checks that every patient has what they need.
At lunchtime, she sits with two other nurses in the staff room. They drink hot tea and eat çörek while talking about their families and weekend plans. Even though they are tired, they laugh together because helping people gives them strength.
In the afternoon, Aýlar prepares medicine trays and checks the heart monitor of a sleeping patient. She adjusts his blanket and whispers,
“You will be fine.”
When her shift finally ends, the sun is beginning to set. She walks out of the hospital feeling exhausted but proud. The day was long, but every moment mattered.
Aýlar thinks to herself,
“A busy hospital is full of challenges, but it is also full of hope.”
